FAQ & Advice

Find the right tool for your skin and hair care. All the answers on material, firmness, use and care – so you can choose with confidence.

Note: Skin and hair feel are individual. Start with light pressure and increase pressure and frequency as needed. QUOALA deliberately makes no medical promises (such as "detox", "removes cellulite" or "stops hair loss"). If your skin is broken, irritated, inflamed or affected by eczema: please do not brush, and consult a doctor if in doubt.

Material & choice: find your brush

Boar bristle or tampico (vegan) – which suits me?

Boar bristle is an animal bristle with fine scales along its shaft. These scales grip hair or skin evenly and without harshness. Boar bristle suits more sensitive skin and is a good way into dry brushing. Tampico is a plant fibre from the agave – the vegan alternative, a little more robust and grippier, ideal for a more intense exfoliation or for anyone who prefers not to use animal-derived products. Detailed comparison in the magazine.

Which firmness suits sensitive skin?

Always start with soft or medium. For sensitive or thin skin, pure pig bristle (soft) or horsehair & tampico (medium) is the right choice. Firm tampico bristle ("firm") is meant for skin that is already used to mechanical stimulation. Begin on less sensitive areas (shins, forearms) and increase pressure and area slowly.

Why does QUOALA use FSC-certified beech wood?

Beech is naturally hard, water-resistant and durable – ideal for use in the bathroom. FSC certification guarantees that the wood comes from responsibly managed forests: no clear-cutting, protection of biodiversity, fair working conditions along the supply chain. More in the magazine.

What is the difference between the bath brush with and without a cord?

Both versions are identical in construction. The cord is for hanging – the recommended way to store the brush after use, so it can dry freely and no water sits in the wooden body. If you prefer to store the brush flat or use another holder, choose the version without a cord.

Use: brushing properly

How do I use a body brush for dry brushing?

Brush on dry skin before showering. Start at the feet and work upwards in long, gliding strokes towards the heart. Circular or zigzag movements are optional. Three to five minutes a day is plenty. Pressure: medium – the skin should be slightly pink, never burning. Full guide.

Can I use the ionic monastery brush wet in the shower?

No. The ionic monastery brush is designed exclusively for dry massage before showering. The fine bronze wires oxidise on contact with water; used wet, the brush is permanently damaged. For wet use in the shower, take a classic bath brush.

How often should I brush?

Body care: daily, three to five minutes before showering. If you have sensitive skin, start with two to three times a week and build up. Hair: daily; 50 to 80 strokes are often recommended – adapt this to your hair type and how your scalp responds.

In which direction do I brush when dry brushing?

Always towards the heart. Legs from bottom to top, arms from the hands towards the shoulders, abdomen in clockwise circles. This is the classic dry-brushing technique and feels most comfortable for most people – we make no medical claims for it.

Care & longevity

How do I clean my wooden brush properly?

After each use: rinse briefly under running water (dry brushes: tap out instead) and hang by the cord with the bristles pointing down. For a deep clean once or twice a month: stand the bristles in lukewarm water with a splash of vinegar for five minutes, keeping the wooden handle dry. Never put it in the dishwasher. Full care guide.

Can my bath brush stay hanging wet after the shower?

Hanging yes, but not inside the damp shower. Hang the brush in a well-ventilated spot – ideally outside the shower or bathroom niche. Standing moisture is the biggest enemy of FSC wood: water in the wooden body leads to cracks and a shorter life.

When should I replace my brush?

With proper care, QUOALA brushes last for years. Signs that it is time: bristles stay bent and no longer spring back, the wood shows deep cracks, or the cleaning performance drops noticeably. A slight patina on the wood (darkening) is normal and no reason to replace it.

Can I oil the wood?

Yes, we recommend it. Massage a few drops of natural plant oil (linseed, walnut or olive oil) into dry wood, leave for five minutes, wipe off the excess. Every two to three months with frequent wet use, once or twice a year for dry brushes.

Body Care (Bath Brushes, Ionic Dry Brushes, Soap Saver Bags)

The degree of firmness is primarily determined by the material and bristle length.

  • Soft (pig bristles): For more sensitive skin and daily routines. Particularly pleasant when wet, as natural bristles "carry" water/soap well.
  • Medium (horsehair & Tampico mix): Noticeable exfoliation, but still very suitable for everyday use. For normal skin – the typical "all-rounder."
  • Firm / Vegan (pure Tampico): Plant-based agave fiber with a lot of grip. For those who like stronger scrubbing or want to work on robust skin areas (e.g., back).

Rule of thumb: If you're unsure → start with soft (and use it wet first, with plenty of lather).

Wet (shower/bath):

  • Bath brushes (all variants) + soap bags.

Dry (before showering):

  • Ionic dry brushes / monastery brushes: to be used exclusively on dry skin.

If you want to start body care "gently": wet in the shower is usually more tolerable than dry brushing.

  • With cord: Practical for hanging in the shower – supports hygienic drying (bristles down). Often also the best choice if you want to keep the brush looking good for as long as possible.

Without cord: Clean, minimalist design – ideal if you store it horizontally and dry.

Ion brushes combine natural bristles with ultra-fine bronze wires. The realistic effect is not "magic" but physics: bronze can dissipate static charges on the surface – many perceive this as a "calmer", less charged skin sensation.

Application (brief & safe):

  1. Only on dry skin.
  2. Brush with light pressure.
  3. Work towards the heart (feet → legs → upper body).
  4. Shower afterwards, care for skin as usual.

The bronze wires are very fine and should not "scrub like wire". What is important:

  • Light pressure instead of strong rubbing
  • Not on irritated/sensitive skin
  • Not on moles, open wounds, sunburn

If you are very sensitive: choose the softer version (horsehair & bronze) instead of the firm one (Tampico & bronze).

The QUOALA soap bag (GOTS-certified organic blended fabric) is made for anyone who wants to use solid soap – without a scratchy mesh feel.

  • Quickly makes soap foamy
  • Provides a very mild exfoliation
  • Perfect for collecting and using up soap remnants

Slightly elastic → adapts well to the bar of soapTip: Rinse briefly after use and hang to dry.

Hair Care (Paddle Brush, Hairbrushes, Round Brushes)

At QUOALA, it's important to note: Detangling is not the same as Grooming/Finishing.

  • Paddle Brush (wooden pins): Your base for gentle detangling (even with slightly damp hair). Ideal for medium to long hair. Anti-static due to natural materials.
  • Boar Bristle Hairbrush (medium–firm): For straight to slightly wavy hair, if you want shine and a well-groomed finish (sebum distribution instead of plastic static).
  • Tampico Hairbrush (firm, vegan): For thick/strong hair, if you like more grip and a noticeably effective brushing action (not ideal for sensitive scalps).

Blow-drying Brushes (Round Brushes): For styling/volume with a hairdryer – depending on the diameter and bristle material.

For very curly/kinky hair, the most important point is: Brushing dry often destroys the curl pattern and can increase frizz.

  • For detangling: rather a paddle brush (gently) or a wide-tooth comb – ideally when the hair is slightly damp.
  • Not intended as detangling brushes (for strong curls/kinks): both hair brushes (boar and Tampico).

If you still want to use them: rather specifically for finishing (e.g., smoothing the roots for sleek looks), not "through the entire length."

  • Boar bristles: absorb natural oils and help distribute them through the lengths → often visibly more shine and smoother-falling hair.
  • Tampico (vegan, plant-based): has more "grip" and feels firmer → for strong hair and anyone who likes a more intense brushing sensation.

Note: Vegan at QUOALA does not automatically mean gentle.

A simple, logical sequence (without overthinking):

  1. Detangle: Paddle brush (gently, working from ends to roots)
  2. Care/Finish: Hairbrush (Boar = shine / Tampico = firmer grip)
  3. Styling: Round brush + blow dryer for shape/volume

Mini-tip: If you only want 1 tool: Paddle brush. If you want "finish + shine": Add a boar hairbrush.

  • Small boar bristle round brush (Ø 13/35 mm): Fringe, contours, short to medium-length hair, precise styling.

Tampico round brush (Ø 24/50 mm): Medium-length, strong hair, more volume/tension when blow-drying (less suitable for very fine hair).

Frizz is often caused by friction and static electricity – especially with cheap plastic brushes. Natural materials (wood, natural bristles) are often the more relaxed choice here.Tip: Don't brush "too dry", use gentle pressure, and if necessary, a tiny bit of oil in the ends (not in the roots).

Hand & Foot Care (Hand & Nail Brushes, Tradesman Brushes, Foot File)

The shorter the bristles, the less they can yield → they appear stiffer and "grab" dirt better. This is desired for nails, soil, oil, and workshop dirt.

  • Hand & Nail Brush (double-sided): Everyday tool for hands + nails (precise nail cleaning).
  • Tradesman's Brush: when things get really messy (oil, paint, dirt) – very direct, very robust.

Coarse for tougher calluses, fine for finishing. Use dry or after a foot bath – whatever you find more comfortable. (Important: don't overdo it, respect the skin barrier.)

Man Care (Beard, Hair, Hands – simple & functional)

The QUOALA range includes a compact beard brush made of FSC pear wood with boar bristles (medium–firm) – length approx. 9.5 cm (also ideal for on the go).

Typical fit:

  • Short to medium-length beard: perfect for daily brushing (shape, well-groomed look).
  • Very long beard: first detangle (e.g., comb), then use the brush more for finishing/root area.

Yes – many use a small round brush for contours, mustaches, or to “shape” with low heat. Important: blow-dry gently, not too hot, and do not irritate the skin.

Uncomplicated, functional, no frills:

  1. Beard brush (boar bristles, medium-firm) – Grooming & Finish
  2. Tradesman's brush – for workshop/garden/outdoor hands
  3. Hand & nail brush – for clean nails in everyday life
  4. Soap pouch – if you prefer showering with solid soap (also for soap remnants)

Optional (depending on your routine):

  • Ionic dry brush as a short morning ritual (dry use only, light pressure)

Boar bristle hairbrush for a well-groomed finish for short to medium-length hair (Note: Brushing does not stop hair loss – it is a grooming tool, not a medical treatment).

Vegan Care

No. At QUOALA, vegan means: plant fibers instead of animal hair. Many vegan fibers (e.g., Tampico) are even grippier and feel firmer than some animal hairs. If you live vegan: choose the vegan option – if you are also sensitive, still start gently (less pressure, less frequent use).

Longevity, Care & Family

Because functionality and longevity take precedence: e.g., so that straps/loops don't immediately stretch out when wet. QUOALA consciously communicates such trade-offs precisely rather than absolutely (no "100% plastic-free" dogma).

  • Never leave it in water
  • Rinse after use (where wet) and allow to dry thoroughly
  • Brushes with cord: ideally hang them up (bristles facing down)

Ionic dry brushes: do not clean with water, only tap out.

QUOALA tools are primarily intended for adults. If used on children at all:

  • only very soft, only wet, only without pressure
  • firm tampico or very hard brushes are not suitable for delicate children's skin.
