Real Wood, Real Transparency: Why QUOALA Relies on FSC®
When I, Gregory Basmadjian, founded QUOALA as a one-man show, I faced a big question: How do I build a brand that not only claims to be sustainable but can also credibly prove it? When you offer wooden grooming tools, simply writing "pure nature" on the packaging is no longer enough.
That's why today, every single QUOALA wood product is FSC®-certified. But the journey there also showed me that sustainability is rarely black and white. Let's talk openly about why we chose European FSC wood – and why even the best certificate isn't perfect.
Contents of this article:
1. Plastic, Bamboo, and the Search for the Right Material
The cosmetics industry is full of quick fixes. When it comes to brushes, materials often dominate for which we consciously chose a different, more durable alternative:
Focus on Durability Instead of Short-Lived Plastic
Instead of petroleum-based plastic (nylon & acrylic), which can build up static electricity, we rely on natural materials. Our natural bristles and wooden pins offer a gentler feel and are biodegradable at the end of their lifecycle, while also bringing a more sophisticated aesthetic to your bathroom.
Local Wood Instead of Global Bamboo
Bamboo grows extremely fast and is often celebrated as an eco-wonder. However, since bamboo mostly comes from Asia, this often means long transport routes. For QUOALA, it was clear: We want durable, solid wood from Europe (such as beech, hornbeam, or pear wood). This guarantees short supply chains, an earthy feel, and supports local forestry.
But wood is only good if the forest doesn't suffer.
2. Why FSC Wood is Better Than "Normal" Wood
Illegal logging and exploitation are global problems. If you buy wood without proof, you simply don't know if a valuable ecosystem was destroyed for it. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) offers the strictest and most credible system here.
External environmental organizations like the WWF repeatedly emphasize the importance of FSC. Compared to conventional wood, FSC wood offers crucial advantages:
2.1 Protection of Biodiversity
Rare animal and plant species in the forest are protected, clear-cutting is prohibited[1].
2.2 No Dangerous Pesticides
The use of highly dangerous chemicals in the forest is strictly prohibited[1].
2.3 Social Justice
Forest workers receive fair wages and safe working conditions, and the rights of indigenous peoples are respected[1].
2.4 Chain-of-Custody
The journey of the wood is meticulously controlled from the forest to the finished brush. This is the only way to exclude illegal wood from the supply chain[1].
3. The Unvarnished Truth: The Weaknesses of the FSC System
However, true transparency also means naming the disadvantages. FSC is not free of criticism and is administratively extremely complex. This strict control of the Chain-of-Custody presents real difficulties for small, local businesses in practice.
A practical example: Imagine a small, local producer who has trees on their own property. One of these trees dies a natural death. The producer fells it and wants to use the wood for beautiful, resource-saving products. This is the epitome of sustainability! But because this isolated tree and the small business have not gone through the expensive and complex FSC certification process, this product can never bear the FSC label.
The system is rigid and sometimes excludes precisely those small, hyper-local, and extremely sustainable cycles because they cannot afford the bureaucratic effort. Furthermore, FSC is occasionally criticized internationally because its implementation is incomplete in some countries around the world.
4. Why QUOALA Still Chooses This Path
So why do I, as a founder, still rely 100% on FSC? Because, on a global and scalable level, it is currently the best and most reliable tool we have to use resources sparingly and make supply chains transparent. It is the only way I can credibly assure you, the customer: No exploitation was involved in the making of this brush.
Building such a certified supply chain is a massive effort for a startup and a one-man show. At this point, I would like to express a huge thank you to FSC Switzerland. The support and advice I received there as a small founder were outstanding and made QUOALA possible in the first place.
When you choose a QUOALA wooden brush, you're not just buying a grooming tool. You are supporting an honest, transparent approach that strives to make things a little better – step by step.
